YHA Festival of Walking 2024

BMC are looking for walk leaders to support the YHA Festival of Walking
Join the BMC and the YHA during September and October as part of the YHA Festival of Walking
There will be 5 flagship walks taking place across England as part of the festival:
Walk 1 - Sat 14th Sept from YHA Hartington Hall in the Peak District
Walk 2 - Sat 21st Sept from YHA Ambleside in the Lake District
Walk 3 - Sat 28th Sept from YHA The Sill at Hadrian's Wall
Walk 4 - Sat 5th Oct from YHA Boggle Hole North Yorkshire
Walk 5 - Sat 12th Oct from YHA Hartington Hall in the Peak District
There will be up to 50 participants on each walk, and we need 3-5 volunteer walk leaders to support each walk.
A full event plan and emergency procedure will be provided to volunteers once attendance is confirmed.
Volunteers will be supported by the BMC and the YHA on the day who will also complete and share a risk assessment in advance. Each walk will have a YHA lead person and pre planned walk route.

Qualifications/experience:
- A relevant Mountain Training hill walking qualification or training (and in consolidation period)
- Outdoor First Aid

As a walk leader, your responsibilities will include:
- Taking care of and supporting participants
- Briefing participants at the beginning of the walk
- Ensuring the safety of participants and fellow volunteers
- Guiding participants around the route
- Keeping to timings
- Bringing suitable kit and equipment for the walk (we will be able to support you if you don't have everything)
- Manage any issues or emergencies
- Any other responsibilities as required by the opportunities you join.
To ensure the safety of participants BMC ask that volunteers have either a Lowland Leader, Hill and Moorland Leader or Mountain Leader qualification or have completed the training for such qualifications and are in the consolidation period.
